Mark Shaheen Lal is making significant strides in the fight against HIV stigma after receiving his diagnosis on May 1 of this year. Facing this life-changing news was initially daunting; however, with unwavering support from family and friends, he is now sharing his journey to encourage young individuals to confront the realities of HIV.
Amid a troubling increase in HIV cases reported in the country—552 new cases between January and June 2024—Mr. Lal is determined to inspire change in attitudes towards HIV, especially among youth. During this same period, 13 individuals living with HIV succumbed to HIV-related illnesses, a sobering figure in comparison to the 82 deaths recorded in all of 2023.
Empowered by his diagnosis at 23, Mr. Lal is turning what could have been a tale of despair into a narrative of resilience and purpose. By openly discussing his experiences, he is challenging long-standing stereotypes and the stigma that often surrounds HIV. “The stigma surrounding HIV is still overwhelming,” he emphasizes.
He urges individuals to get tested, seek immediate treatment, and proactively manage their health, stating, “This is the way forward. Don’t bow to stigma.” Following his public announcement during the World AIDS Day celebration in Nadi, he has received supportive messages from people across the globe, reinforcing the power of his advocacy.
Mr. Lal points out that stigma remains a significant barrier for many battling HIV—a fear of judgment and rejection often prevents individuals from seeking help and support. However, he reassures the public that with effective treatment such as antiretroviral therapy (ARVs), a fulfilling and healthy life is attainable.
Expressing gratitude for the support he has received, Mr. Lal acknowledges the importance of humanizing sensitive topics like HIV to foster more productive discussions. He calls for enhanced education and a compassionate approach to tackle fears related to the disease. Acknowledging that he is the first person in Fiji to publicly identify as living with HIV since 2015, he hopes to pave the way for greater openness within the community.
By stepping out of the shadows of silence, Mr. Lal has not only embraced his identity but has also transformed his struggles into motivation for others. He asserts, “I am not my diagnosis. I am my courage, my love, my strength.”
Reflecting on his journey, he expresses, “For every tear I’ve shed, for every fear I’ve faced, I have emerged stronger.” Lal’s story is a timely reminder of the strength that can be found in vulnerability and the power of community support.
This narrative serves as a hopeful beacon for those grappling with similar issues, highlighting the potential for personal and communal healing through awareness and education.
In summary, Mr. Lal’s bravery in openly discussing his HIV status is crucial in advocating for change and reducing stigma, reminding everyone that a diagnosis does not define one’s worth or potential.
