Mark Shaheel Lal is boldly challenging the stigma surrounding HIV and advocating for awareness after receiving his diagnosis on May 1 of this year. Facing his health condition was not easy, but with unwavering support from his family and friends, he has transformed his personal struggle into a powerful message of hope and resilience.

In light of the rising number of HIV infections in the country, which saw 552 new cases reported from January to June 2024, and 13 deaths due to HIV-related illnesses, Mr. Lal’s story comes at a crucial time. He aims to inspire young individuals to recognize the importance of knowing their health status and to encourage open discussions around HIV.

Mr. Lal, a 23-year-old young advocate from Vunikavikaloa, Rakiraki, is dedicated to promoting LGBTQ+ rights and empowering youth. He publicly announced his HIV status during the World AIDS Day celebration in Nadi, making him the first person in Fiji to do so since 2015. His willingness to share his journey has resonated with many, attracting messages of support from individuals as far away as Korea and India.

“The stigma surrounding HIV is still overwhelming,” Mr. Lal stated, underscoring the need for routine testing, treatment, and management of one’s health. He emphasizes that with proper medical care, including antiretroviral therapy, individuals living with HIV can lead fulfilling lives, countering the misconception that HIV is a death sentence.

Mr. Lal’s commitment to advocacy reflects a growing movement to normalize conversations around HIV. He hopes to foster greater understanding and education, addressing the fear and misconceptions that prevent many from seeking help. He believes that sensitive topics like HIV should be humanized to effectively tackle the challenges associated with the disease.

“I am grateful to have a strong support system that helps me through the tough times,” he expressed, highlighting the absence of sufficient mental and physical support systems for young people grappling with their HIV status. He calls for improved medical services to better address HIV cases, noting the efforts of the Ministry of Health while recognizing that more is needed.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Lal said, “I am not my diagnosis. I am my courage, my love, my strength.” His experiences have shaped him into a more resilient individual, embodying a message of hope for those facing similar challenges.
