Breaking the Silence: Mental Health Crisis Demands Urgent Attention

Dr. Balram Pundit, senior medical superintendent at St Giles Psychiatric Hospital in Suva, has highlighted the lack of sufficient investment in prioritizing mental health and well-being in society. Speaking during a panel discussion organized by the Ministry of Health to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Dr. Pundit addressed the stigma surrounding suicide and its prevention.

He emphasized that the associated stigma needs urgent attention, pointing out that inadequate investment in mental health facilities and support for those suffering quietly exacerbates the issue. “It’s not just about monetary support; we need to invest in changing behaviors related to this issue,” stated Dr. Pundit. He stressed the importance of allocating adequate resources to support young people facing mental health challenges and creating safe spaces for them to express themselves.

According to the Fiji Police Force, there have been 63 recorded suicide cases from January 1 to August 22 this year, slightly down from 66 cases during the same timeframe last year. The data also indicates 44 attempted suicides nationwide, a decrease from 47 in the prior year. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci called these statistics alarming, with eight suicides and five attempted suicides reported among individuals under the age of 18.

Senior citizens over 60 years have the highest incidence, recording 19 suicides and two attempted suicides. The statistics indicate a significant prevalence of suicides among males, totaling 50 cases. ACP Raikaci is urging community leaders to assist in reshaping the narrative around mental health. “We must develop a culture of understanding and support, fostering safe spaces for open conversations,” he said, adding the need to address issues such as cyberbullying and promote compassion in the digital realm.

Common factors linked to suicide and attempted suicide include domestic disputes, family conflicts, relationship issues, stress, and health problems.
