The chief of Bua province, Ratu Makutu Nagagavoka, has raised concerns that many drug-related incidents in the area may go unreported. He noted that local residents are apprehensive about the possible violence and harassment they could face if they notify law enforcement about such activities.
Ratu Makutu described the situation as a “climate of silence,” where drug abuse and trafficking remain unchallenged due to these fears. He emphasized that concerns for personal safety further discourage individuals from coming forward with information, as they worry about potential retaliation from drug dealers and users.
He called for the Fiji Police Force to engage in awareness campaigns within villages to educate residents about the anonymity of their reports and to inform them about alternative ways to report issues. Ratu Makutu highlighted the importance of collaboration between local communities and the police to effectively combat the drug problem.
