Breaking the Silence: A Call to End Gender-Based Violence

As the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence commenced, Asinate Ofa emphasized the urgent need to confront the pervasive culture of silence surrounding child adversity and violence in society. Ofa, who is with the International Organisation for Migration’s (IOM) Resource Management Unit, spoke at the launch event held at Tanoa Plaza in Suva, where she served as one of three moderators alongside various IOM members and stakeholders.

Reflecting on her personal experience, Ofa recounted the physical and emotional trauma she endured, beginning with the violence inflicted by her father when she was just 19. She highlighted how traditional norms often compel women to stay silent and endure their suffering. “At a young age, I witnessed my mother being beaten by my father, and as the eldest, the violence affected me profoundly,” she shared.

As a survivor, Ofa is committed to reaching out to others by sharing her story and advocating for awareness about the vital need to end the cycle of violence, which, she insists, starts with individuals taking charge of their own situations. She expressed optimism about hearing more stories from others who have faced similar challenges, believing that collective sharing can foster change.

IOM’s Chief of Mission, Solomon Kantha, underscored the severity of the issue, noting that statistics reveal two out of three women experience domestic violence. He affirmed that addressing these critical issues remains a priority.

This year’s activism campaign serves as a reminder that progress is possible through awareness and shared experiences, marking a hopeful step towards breaking the silence around gender-based violence. By encouraging open conversations, communities can work together to create safer environments for all.

Overall, this initiative showcases the resilience of survivors and the collective efforts needed to combat domestic violence and promote gender equality.
