Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Hon. Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the serious threat posed by drugs, which harm not just individuals but entire communities and families. He warned that failing to reject drug use could have dire consequences for the nation’s future.
At the conclusion of the Gold N Water Carnival 2024 in Tavua, Professor Prasad highlighted the carnival’s theme, “Educating and Empowering the Wider Community to ‘Say No to Drugs’,” calling it both timely and significant.
“Say no to drugs; say no to violence against our women and children,” he urged.
The Minister noted that while the government has implemented a national drug and narcotic strategy, there is an increased focus on supporting law enforcement and related agencies.
“I urge all young people and those who may have encountered drug use or trafficking to reject drugs, as they jeopardize not only your life but also the well-being of your families and friends, as well as the country’s productivity and social fabric,” he stated.
Professor Prasad pointed out that globally, the detrimental effects of hard drugs have led to the destruction of families, communities, and individuals.
