Grace Sovalawa, a graduate of Fiji National University (FNU), emphasized the need for more women to enter the field of land surveying during the institution’s Open Day in Nasinu on Friday.

Ms. Sovalawa explained that her education primarily revolved around the use of AutoCAD, a 2D and 3D computer-aided design software, along with various surveying techniques applicable to different land types. She noted that the curriculum also touched on architectural principles and engineering requirements, such as building construction.

At just 21 years old and hailing from Suvalailai, Rewa, she earned her diploma in Land Surveying after three years of study. She acknowledged the challenges women may face in a predominantly male field but encouraged determination, stating, “This field is open to everyone, and for a woman to join a men’s field is quite a challenge because you’ll be pushed around.”

Ms. Sovalawa highlighted the shortage of land surveyors in Fiji and advocated for more female involvement in this profession. She believes that land surveying is a great career choice for women who enjoy outdoor activities like camping and sightseeing.

While some students may encounter difficulties with the mathematical and physics aspects of the program, she noted that peer support is readily available. The prerequisites for entry into this program include passing marks in both English and Mathematics, as well as achieving a minimum score of 200 out of 400.

She also pointed out that FNU offers various extracurricular activities, including the FUSA (Fiji University Sports Association) games and debates. The benefits of the land surveying course include opportunities to cross-credit to the University of the South Pacific (USP) for studies in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as well as potential scholarships for overseas education.

Currently, Ms. Sovalawa works at KGenesis Engineering and Consultant Pte Ltd as a chainman/survey technician.
