Grace Sovalawa, a graduate of Fiji National University (FNU), emphasized the need for more women in the land surveying profession during the institution’s Open Day held in Nasinu on Friday. The 21-year-old from Suvalailai, Rewa, shared her experiences, highlighting her skills in using AutoCAD, a software application for 2D and 3D computer-aided design, among other surveying techniques.
After three years of study, Sovalawa earned her diploma in Land Survey, stating, “This field is open to everyone, and for a woman to join a male-dominated field is certainly a challenge. However, if you are determined, you can succeed.” She pointed out the shortage of land surveyors in Fiji and urged more women to consider entering this career.
Sovalawa noted that being a land surveyor is ideal for women who enjoy outdoor activities such as camping and sightseeing. She acknowledged that some students may face challenges with the mathematical and physics components of the program, but assured that peer support is available.
To enroll in the land surveying program, candidates must pass English and Mathematics and achieve a minimum score of 200 out of 400. Additionally, she mentioned the extracurricular activities available to students, which include sports and debating competitions through the Fiji University Sports Association (FUSA).
Highlighting the advantages of her course, Sovalawa mentioned that students can transfer credits to the University of the South Pacific (USP) for courses like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and can also apply for scholarships overseas. Currently, she works as a chainman/survey technician at KGenesis Engineering and Consultant Pte Ltd.
