Breaking Barriers: Ruci’s Journey in Tiling Triumphs Over Tradition

Ruci Vukialau is poised to make her mark in a male-dominated industry after graduating from Fiji National University, Nasinu, with a Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling. At 19 years old, she completed 12 weeks of training with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) and is now on the brink of entering the workforce.

Her ambition to become a tile layer was ignited by observing her father while he worked on home repairs and improvements. Despite the challenges of being one of the few women in her class, Ms. Vukialau persevered through instances of self-doubt and silence in class discussions.

“I had a dream to succeed and advance in the workforce. It was exhausting at times, but I had a supportive group encouraging me to continue my studies. Clinging to my faith kept me motivated to complete the course,” she shared.

As she prepares to transition into her new career, Ruci is aware of the reality of long working hours and the need for flexibility, which can be particularly challenging for those balancing family and personal responsibilities.
