Ruci Vukialau is set to make her mark in a male-dominated industry after graduating from Fiji National University in Nasinu. At just 19 years old, she has earned a Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling following 12 weeks of training with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).
Her aspiration to become a tiler was inspired by watching her father work on home renovations. Despite the challenges of being one of the few women in her class, Vukialau persevered. “At times, I found it difficult to express myself in class and often stayed silent while working among my male peers,” she shared.
Vukialau remained determined to succeed in the workforce, thanks in part to a supportive network that encouraged her throughout her studies. “It was exhausting at times, but my faith helped keep me motivated,” she said.
As she prepares to enter the workforce, Vukialau is aware of the demanding nature of the job, including long hours and the need for constant availability, which can be a challenge for those with family and personal responsibilities.
