Ruci Vukialau is set to pursue a career in a male-dominated industry after graduating on Wednesday from Fiji National University in Nasinu with a Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling. The 19-year-old completed a 12-week training program with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).
Her interest in tile laying was inspired by watching her father as he repaired and upgraded their home. She acknowledged the challenges of training in a predominantly male environment, sometimes finding it difficult to voice her thoughts in class.
“There were times I found it hard to express myself in class, often choosing to remain silent while working alongside them,” Ms. Vukialau shared. “However, I was determined to succeed and advance in the workforce. Although it was exhausting at times, I had a supportive group that encouraged me to continue my studies. My faith played a crucial role in keeping me motivated to complete the course.”
As she prepares to enter the workforce, Ruci is aware of the demanding hours and availability the profession requires, recognizing the challenges this may pose for those balancing family and personal responsibilities.
