Ruci Vukialau is set to make her mark in a predominantly male industry following her graduation from Fiji National University in Nasinu. The 19-year-old recently earned her Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling after completing a 12-week training program with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).
Her aspiration to become a tile layer was ignited by observing her father as he undertook home repairs and renovations. Throughout her training, Ms. Vukialau faced challenges, notably as she was often one of the few women in her classes, which made participation difficult at times.
“I sometimes struggled to express myself in class, often choosing to stay silent while working among my male peers,” she reflected. Despite these hurdles, she remained focused on her goal of succeeding in the workforce, bolstered by a supportive network that encouraged her academic pursuits. Her faith also played a crucial role in keeping her motivated throughout the course.
As she prepares to enter the workforce, Ruci acknowledges the rigorous demands of the field, including lengthy hours and the need for readiness, which can be particularly challenging for those balancing family and personal obligations.
