A new leader is emerging in Fiji’s sugarcane fields—Nemai Diloma, a 26-year-old Roving Sector Assistant with the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) in Nadi. Her journey symbolizes not just her personal achievements but also the resilience and commitment of women in agriculture who are transforming this essential industry.
Nemai, a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture graduate from Fiji National University, joined FSC earlier this year and is making a significant impact in the sugar industry. She views her role as an opportunity to apply her academic knowledge while gaining hands-on experience in a sector critical to Fiji’s economy.
“I see this role as a wonderful opportunity to put my studies into practice while gaining real-world experience,” she stated. As a Roving Sector Assistant, Nemai works with sugarcane growers from planting to harvesting, exemplifying her dedication to high-quality sugar production through her proactive work with farmers.
Each day presents new challenges, and Nemai enjoys collaborating with growers, despite the difficulties of operating in a male-dominated field. Her determination and adaptability have played vital roles in her success.
“Through a willingness to learn, I’ve improved my communication skills, which are essential in building strong relationships with our growers,” she noted. Recently, she showcased her leadership by guiding a team of growers through a challenging planting season, affirming the potential for women to excel in agricultural leadership roles.
Nemai credits much of her growth to the mentorship and support she has received from her colleagues at FSC, highlighting the critical role of a supportive environment in empowering women.
“The guidance from my colleagues has been instrumental. Teamwork, punctuality, and dedication are crucial to achieving our goals in the sugar industry,” she asserted. With a positive outlook on the increasing participation of women in agriculture, she sees this trend as a transformative force for the future of the industry.
