Breaking Barriers: Meet Fiji’s Trailblazing Tiler

Ruci Vukialau, a determined 19-year-old, is poised to make her mark in a traditionally male-dominated industry after graduating from Fiji National University in Nasinu with a Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling. Having completed a 12-week training program with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), she is on the verge of entering the workforce.

Her passion for tiling was ignited while helping her father with home repairs, which inspired her to pursue a career in this field. Despite facing challenges in a classroom predominantly composed of male students, Vukialau remained focused on her goal of success. She reflected on her experiences, noting, “At times, it was difficult to express myself in class, and I often chose to stay quiet while working alongside my peers.”

Vukialau highlighted the exhaustion that came with her studies but credited her supportive classmates and her faith for keeping her motivated. As she prepares to embark on her professional journey, she is aware of the rigorous demands of the job, including long hours and the need for flexibility, which can pose challenges for those balancing work with family responsibilities.
