Ruci Vukialau is set to make her mark in a traditionally male-dominated industry. The 19-year-old recently graduated from Fiji National University in Nasinu with a Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling, after completing 12 weeks of training through the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).
Her aspiration to become a tile layer began when she observed her father working on their home. Ruci recognized the challenges she faced in a primarily male classroom environment, admitting that there were times when she struggled to voice her thoughts and often opted for silence while working with her peers.
However, her determination to succeed in the workforce remained strong. “It was exhausting at times, but I had a supportive group encouraging me to continue my studies. Clinging to my faith kept me motivated to complete the course,” she shared.
As she prepares to enter the workforce, Ruci is aware of the demanding nature of the job, which often involves long hours and flexibility, presenting difficulties for those managing family and personal obligations.
