Moreen Ram, a mother and entrepreneur, was honored as the Best Young Farmer of the Year (Female) during the 2023 President’s Farmers Award ceremony held by Fiji Rice Limited (FRL) in Labasa. The 35-year-old expressed her joy upon receiving the award from Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, and encouraged more women to consider rice farming as a viable business opportunity.

Residing in Muanidevo, Dreketi, Ram has dedicated the last seven years to developing her rice farming venture, with steadfast support from her husband, a civil servant who helps her on the farm.

Ram shared that her family’s long-standing tradition in rice farming inspired her to pursue this path, noting the agricultural knowledge passed down from her parents. As the new rice season approaches in November, she aims to harvest seven tonnes of rice paddy. While she faced challenges with drainage and access to harvesting equipment in the past, cooperative efforts among local farmers have helped to overcome these obstacles.

She highlighted the profitability of rice farming, mentioning the price increase from $850 to $1000 per tonne last December, which has motivated many farmers to remain in the industry. To enhance her operations, she plans to apply for subsidies for planting and weed control.

Ram’s message to women is one of determination and perseverance: “It may seem difficult, but nothing is impossible if you are determined.” Her aspiration is to eventually become the best farmer in Fiji, reinforcing her belief that commitment to one’s goals can lead to success.
