Moreen Ram, a mother and rice farmer, was honored with the title of Best Young Farmer of the Year (Female) at the Fiji Rice Limited (FRL) 2023 President’s Farmers Award ceremony held in Labasa. The 35-year-old received her award from the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, and was visibly moved by the recognition.

Ms. Ram expressed her pride in winning the award and encouraged other women to consider rice farming as a viable career option. Living in Muanidevo, Dreketi, she has dedicated the past seven years to establishing her rice farming business, supported by her husband.

“My husband works as a civil servant, but he always finds time to assist me on the farm,” she stated.

Having grown up in a family with a rich history in rice farming, Ms. Ram stated that her motivation stemmed from her parents’ knowledge in the field. Looking ahead to the upcoming season in November, she plans to harvest seven tonnes of rice paddy, having previously faced challenges related to drainage and access to harvesting equipment. However, these issues have been addressed through a cooperative arrangement where farmers take turns using harvesters.

Describing rice farming as a lucrative venture, Ms. Ram noted that a price increase last December from $850 to $1,000 per tonne has encouraged farmers to remain active in the industry. She also intends to apply for subsidies for planting and weed control to enhance her farming operations.

Encouraging other women, she said, “It may seem difficult, but nothing is impossible if you are determined.” Her aspiration is to become the best farmer in Fiji, emphasizing that women can achieve remarkable things through commitment to their goals.
