Breaking the Silence: Goodman Fielder's Bold Move for Mental Health Support

Breaking Barriers: Goodman Fielder and Lifeline Fiji Join Forces for Mental Health Support

Goodman Fielder International (Fiji) Limited has made a notable advancement in mental health support by partnering with Lifeline Fiji. This collaboration seeks to create a secure environment for its 1,200 employees and their families, while also working to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues within the wider Fijian community.

Tim Carter, General Manager of Goodman Fielder Fiji, highlighted the significance of this alliance by sharing how his family’s experience with mental health challenges has shaped his understanding of the need for professional assistance. “While we want to support our employees, we do not pretend to be mental health experts. That’s where Lifeline comes in,” he said, stressing the importance of qualified help in managing mental health concerns.

Selina Kuruleca, Chairperson of Lifeline Fiji, recognized the support from organizations like Goodman Fielder as crucial for enabling her team to concentrate on their essential services without facing financial obstacles. She also pointed out the pressing demand for mental health training in the community, particularly in light of the ongoing review of the Employment Relations Act, which could create opportunities to include mandatory mental health training in legislative frameworks.

This partnership is designed not just to assist employees, but also to extend its positive influence throughout the community, showcasing Goodman Fielder’s commitment to well-being and the fight against mental health stigma. Lifeline Fiji’s CEO, Jeremaia Qalobula, expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential, saying, “Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of many.”

This initiative aligns with recent efforts in Fiji to address increasing suicide rates among vulnerable groups, particularly older populations facing significant mental health issues. Enhanced community involvement and partnerships have been vital in facilitating change and support, reinforcing the importance of mental health dialogues in both workplaces and wider society.

By fostering an environment that encourages open discussions around mental health, Goodman Fielder and Lifeline Fiji are paving the way for a brighter future for those affected by such challenges. The initiative serves as a beacon of hope, promoting awareness and actively working towards creating a supportive atmosphere for all Fijians.
