Breaking Barriers: Feminism, Culture, and Empowerment in Local Governance

The primary aim of feminism is to dismantle patriarchal systems rather than to eliminate cultural traditions, according to Fay Volatabu from FemLINKPacific. She shared this insight during a panel discussion organized by Dialogue Fiji in Suva on Tuesday at the Tanoa Plaza.

The focus of the discussion was on overcoming obstacles and enhancing female participation in local government elections. Ms. Volatabu responded to a participant’s question regarding how women could overcome barriers while still adhering to cultural norms and addressing the potential risks involved.

“Younger generations are more sensitive to change, while older ones often feel the need to maintain certain traditions while remaining relevant and progressing,” Ms. Volatabu remarked. She mentioned that her previous work experiences have allowed her to balance the preservation of certain cultural norms with the advocacy of critical issues affecting women.

“Though we may not come from families with progressive fathers, it’s possible to find supportive male colleagues or relatives,” she added. “Empowering women sometimes requires a strategic approach to achieve our goals.”

The panel also included Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection; Dr. Shailendra Singh, Head of Journalism at the University of the South Pacific; and Jon Apted, a partner at Munro Leys Lawyers.
