Police Constable (PC) Sadamma, a member of the Labasa Police Station in Fiji, has exemplified the potential for women to succeed in various roles, including that of a police officer, mother, and wife. Her assertion came after she and 37 other officers from the Northern Division received Long Service and Good Conduct medals during a ceremony at the Labasa Civic Centre, presided over by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew.
With two decades of service in the Fiji Police Force, PC Sadamma has navigated her career through challenging environments that were once predominantly male. Reflecting on her experiences, she emphasized the early difficulties faced in her career but credited the support of her family and understanding superiors as instrumental in helping her manage her responsibilities effectively. Currently serving in the Sexual Offence Unit, she focuses on cases primarily involving vulnerable groups, including women and children.
“I chose to become a Policewoman because I wanted to help others, especially women and children,” PC Sadamma remarked, expressing fulfillment in her role. She candidly acknowledged the complexities of balancing her professional obligations with her duties as a mother of three, emphasizing the importance of hard work and resilience in achieving one’s career goals. “Nothing comes easy in life; everyone must either work hard or smart to have a fulfilling career,” she stated.
Her story serves as an inspirational message not only in the context of law enforcement but also as a broader reflection of the evolving role of women in traditionally male-dominated fields. PC Sadamma’s achievements highlight the significance of perseverance and support network, encouraging young women aspiring to join police forces or pursue careers in challenging environments to remain steadfast in their ambitions.
The recognition received by PC Sadamma and her fellow officers marks a notable milestone in the journey toward greater gender equality in law enforcement, steering a hopeful narrative for future generations. This positive acknowledgment of women’s contributions to policing reinforces the notion that determination can lead to success in any field.
