Kelera Vela has showcased that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields during the Pacific Polytech graduation held at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa. As a former volunteer firefighter with seven years of experience at the National Fire Authority stations in Taveuni and Labasa, she was among 105 graduates celebrated at the event.

At 30 years old, Vela, who hails from Vuniwai Village in Seaqaqa, Macuata, earned a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. She expressed her determination, stating, “Female electricians can do equally well as male and I want to be one of them.”

After completing Year 13 at All Saints Secondary School in Labasa, Vela began her journey as a volunteer firefighter before taking a break to care for her children, aged three and nine. She credits her husband, Salato Ramoce, who works for Bula Earthworks, for supporting her return to education. “It wasn’t easy holding numerous hats of a mother, wife, and student, but I managed through the support of my husband and trainers,” Vela shared.

She emphasized the importance of supportive educators in creating a positive learning environment, encouraging students to complete their education. Vela also urged women to chase their career aspirations, regardless of the male dominance that often exists in trade occupations.

This inspiring story highlights the progress women are making in industries where they have been underrepresented and serves as a reminder that with determination and support, anyone can break barriers and pursue their passions. Vela’s achievements not only benefit her but also pave the way for future generations of women in skilled trades.
