Ten-year-old Autiko Kamaiwaca has shown remarkable resilience and an optimistic spirit after enduring seven years of medical treatment and hospital stays. His mother, Luisa Nauvaci, shared that Autiko was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor, a rare kidney cancer primarily affecting children, when he was just three years old in 2017 while they were living in Kashmir, Lautoka.
Luisa recounted the moment they discovered the swelling on Autiko’s right side, which prompted a visit to the Kamikamica Health Centre. Initially, she believed it to be a minor issue. However, after being referred to Lautoka Hospital, Autiko was admitted for scans that confirmed the diagnosis of cancer affecting one of his kidneys.
Throughout his treatment, Autiko underwent several rounds of chemotherapy and various medical procedures, during which he experienced significant hair and weight loss. Luisa was unable to be with him during his chemotherapy sessions due to her pregnancy, but his grandfather and father provided support during hospital visits.
Despite the family’s hardships, including financial challenges when Luisa’s husband was unemployed, they remained hopeful. Luisa expressed gratitude to the Lord for Autiko’s recovery and emphasized the importance of recognizing his symptoms in time to prevent more serious complications.
Now a Year Five student at Loma Primary School, Autiko exhibits strength and joy, showing no signs of weakness from his past. Luisa noted that while some of his friends from the Walk On Walk Strong Kids Fiji (WOWS) program have sadly passed away, she is thankful for the support they received throughout this journey.
The family currently resides in Narata, Sigatoka, and Autiko continues to embrace life with happiness and a positive outlook.
