The recent funeral of late Featherweight Boxer Ubayd Haider in Suva was a poignant reminder of his determination and bravery. Just two days before his final bout in Nadi, Haider fell ill and had requested to be excused from fighting. His elder brother, fellow boxer Sebastian Singh, shared this information during the emotional service attended by many, including Sports Minister Jese Saukuru.

Singh recounted how despite feeling unwell, Ubayd Haider fought valiantly for nine grueling rounds, motivated by a deep sense of loyalty to his nation. “He was sick two days before the fight. He knew he was fighting for his nation. He had asked to be excused from the fight. He was manipulated,” Singh stated, reflecting his pride in Haider’s warrior spirit. Singh added that the community would remember Haider for the legacy he left behind, emphasizing the strong sense of unity and pride among Fijians.

The boxing community and Haider’s family expressed gratitude for the support received during this challenging time. He tragically passed away at the age of 25 after being hospitalized with severe head injuries for 16 days, and he was laid to rest at Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. His wife, Helen, and their two young sons survive him, ensuring his legacy continues through them.

This heart-wrenching story highlights the passion and dedication athletes have not only for their sport but also for their countries. In celebrating Ubayd Haider’s life, we recognize the influence he had as a fighter and as a contributor to the sport in Fiji, inspiring future generations to show resilience and courage in the face of adversity.
