Veteran boxing trainer John Ramos has urged Fiji’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, to direct his investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of boxer Ubayd Haider towards the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF). Ramos raised serious concerns about the BCF’s decision to allow the boxing event on October 26 to proceed without an ambulance present and without conducting any drug tests.
Ramos questioned the rationale behind issuing the boxing permit under such circumstances, emphasizing that the lack of safety measures should have prompted a halt to the event. He expressed a desire for the Minister to scrutinize the actions of the BCF directors regarding their approval of the event.
This call for accountability was echoed by Sydney-based trainer Lepani Wilson, who previously served as the president of the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji. Wilson criticized the BCF for not taking responsibility and emphasized the importance of going through a checklist with promoters before confirming any event to ensure all safety protocols are met.
In response to these concerns, BCF chairman Adi Narayan stated that the title fight had been sanctioned by the International Boxing Organization (IBO) and that the local commission was simply following the necessary procedures. He explained that the ambulance requirement was part of the promoter’s responsibilities and highlighted that he had been assured by the promoter on the day of the event that all arrangements were in place.
Narayan defended his role as chairman, pointing out that he has multiple responsibilities during events, including overseeing the organization of officials and ensuring readiness, and that the stress of the job is often underestimated.
This situation has sparked a crucial dialogue around safety in boxing, with advocates calling for stricter regulations and adherence to protocols to prevent future tragedies in the sport. The investigation’s outcome may lead to vital changes within the BCF that could enhance the safety standards for boxers and participants alike.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding athletes’ well-being and ensuring that all necessary measures are in place for their protection. As the investigation unfolds, there is hope that reforms will be implemented to create a safer environment for boxing in Fiji.
