Reginald Prakash from the Police team may not have secured a victory against Emosi Vucago from the Army in their 60-63.5kg boxing match, but his performance left a lasting impression on the audience during the second day of the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl Boxing Competition held at the LICI Courts in Laucala Bay, Suva.
Vucago emerged triumphant, winning by a split decision after three challenging rounds characterized by intense back-and-forth action. Initially, Prakash appeared to take charge of the match, but Vucago swiftly adapted, exploiting the weaknesses in Prakash’s technique, which ultimately swayed the judges in his favor.
This bout marked Prakash’s second consecutive year at the Sukuna Bowl. He acknowledged the strong performance of his fellow police competitors while showing respect for the Army boxers who brought a fierce challenge. “We have prepared well, same as our opponents, but as we know, they’ve been fighting wholly around,” Prakash remarked, noting that despite their intensive two-month training, they were able to offer tough competition.
Vucago, reflecting on his victory, expressed gratitude for his win and attributed his success to divine support and the camaraderie of his fellow Army boxers. “Before we trained, we would always put God first and during our training, we would make sacrifices and continued to push ourselves through it all,” he shared.
This event highlights the spirit of sportsmanship, teamwork, and the dedication of athletes who strive for excellence while supporting one another. The competition encourages growth not just in sports skill but also in community and camaraderie, promising a bright future for all competitors involved.
In summary, while Prakash faced defeat, his strong performance and the mutual respect between competitors signal a promising path for the future of boxing in the region, where athletes are determined to grow and excel, regardless of the outcomes.
