The Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) has reinstated the license of the South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) after finding no evidence to support allegations made against the organization.
BCF Chairman Adi Narayan addressed these claims in response to comments from former BCF head Dr. Subhash Appana, which were published in The Fiji Times on July 3. Dr. Appana had declined to renew SPBP’s license last year amid allegations that promoters were exploiting boxers for personal gain.
Dr. Appana indicated that an investigation and resolution process had been initiated but was ignored when the new board took over. Narayan clarified during a press conference that the transition included a review of all existing information, including a letter from a New Zealand boxing official, which did not provide substantial evidence against SPBP.
“During our second meeting, we decided to disregard previous resolutions and start fresh with SPBP,” Narayan said. “They were reissued their license, and since then, they have successfully organized two to three boxing events with great success.”
Narayan emphasized that the issue seemed to be a personal conflict between Dr. Appana and SPBP promoter Fredy Chand, and not a broader issue within BCF. “Dr. Appana acted on his own without board consensus, making it a personal matter between him and Chand,” he stated.
Chand has reportedly made BCF aware of his disputes with Dr. Appana and is now seeking legal counsel on the issue.
