Veteran boxing trainer John Ramos has emphasized the critical role of amateur boxing in shaping the careers of professional boxers. This insight is part of his new book, “Maker of Champions,” set to be launched on Saturday.

In “Maker of Champions,” Ramos pays tribute to Hector Hatch, a former Olympian and the Fiji amateur welterweight champion, who served as his mentor. Ramos recounts how he started his boxing journey in 1962 at the Suva Youth Centre, now known as the Young Men Christian Association, where he trained under Hatch. Together, they participated in weekly amateur boxing competitions at the PWD Gym in Walu Bay, Suva.

The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA) was founded in 1953 and is affiliated with the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateue, which played a pivotal role in promoting boxing in Fiji. In 1956, a group of amateur boxers represented Fiji in a competition in New Zealand, leading to Hatch and Thomas Schuster qualifying for the Olympic Games.

Hatch’s contributions to amateur boxing in Fiji were significant. He served in various roles within FABA from 1958 until his retirement in 1992, nurturing remarkable talent. Notable boxers who emerged during this era include bronze medallists from the 1962 Commonwealth Games, Moses Evans and Holgar Johansen, as well as Sani Fine, who secured gold in the light heavyweight category at the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

Ramos highlighted that the success of professional boxers can often be traced back to their amateur roots, crediting Hatch’s leadership for cultivating a strong base of talent. He described Hatch as not just a trainer but a cornerstone of amateur boxing in Fiji, whose vision and commitment remain inspirational.

In light of the current state of amateur boxing in Fiji, Ramos believes there is a pressing need for a leader similar to Hatch to revitalize the sport and restore public confidence. He pointed out several amateur boxers who transitioned successfully into professional careers, showcasing the potential that lies within the amateur ranks.

This book launch and Ramos’ reflections underline the enduring legacy of amateur boxing as a foundation for professional success and the importance of mentorship in sports.

As we look forward to the launch of “Maker of Champions,” it serves as a reminder of the rich history and potential of boxing in Fiji, inspiring upcoming generations of athletes to pursue their dreams in the sport.
