Boxing in Crisis: Promoter Under Fire for Security Lapse

The issue of security emerged as a key topic of discussion after the recent Bluewater Boxing Promotions event, prompting the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) to seek clarification from the promoter. BCF chairman Adi Narayan highlighted that the matter was raised by Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, particularly regarding the incidents that took place at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

Narayan stated that prior to the event, he had received assurances from the promoter, Samir Khan, that all arrangements, including security, were well in hand. “I asked if everything was under control, and he said yes. Security? Yes, everything was a yes but that yes was not there, and that was disturbing,” Narayan remarked.

Upon visiting the venue on the day of the event, Narayan confirmed the ring’s condition and engaged in discussions with Khan, who assured him that the necessary preparations were underway.

The BCF plans to address the security shortcomings with Khan, noting that this oversight has negatively impacted the reputation of boxing in Fiji. Narayan emphasized the importance of maintaining standards, stating, “He is a licensed promoter, and this could affect his promotion, he has another one in November. He has got to draw the line and follow the rules and regulations because we can’t favor any promoter; we must be fair.”

Before each boxing event, promoters are provided with a checklist aimed at ensuring a smooth program while safeguarding the attendees’ safety and security. However, the recent event suffered from significant security deficiencies, leading to unauthorized individuals entering the ring.

“There was a total lack of security which resulted in the corner people entering the ring. The protocol set by the BCF requires promoters to provide adequate security at the ring corners to prevent such interventions, but that was lacking,” Narayan explained. “It was a total breakdown of security, as a result, people jumped inside the ring and the commotion erupted.”

The BCF intends to hold Khan accountable, as there is a promoters’ agreement along with a checklist that must be adhered to.
