A significant moment in Fijian boxing history unfolded in 1977 when veteran trainer John Ramos faced a suspension from the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji (PBWAF), threatening his presence in Sakaraia Ve’s corner for his fight against Ali Afakasi. This intriguing backstory is detailed in Ramos’ upcoming book, “Maker of Champions,” set for release on Saturday.

Afakasi, a Samoan fighter based in New Zealand, was rated in the Commonwealth’s welterweight division and was considered a crucial opponent for Ve, who had aspirations of claiming a Commonwealth title. Afakasi brought a notable resume to the ring, having won the South Seas welterweight championship in 1974 and holding multiple titles, including New Zealand lightweight, welterweight, and Australasian welterweight championships.

Despite Ramos’ suspension, Ve opted to continue with the fight, notifying the PBWAF that his main trainer would not be in his corner, surprising PBWAF secretary Mumtaz Ali. Ali acknowledged that Ve’s decision was in his best interest, implying that remaining loyal to Ramos could have endangered his boxing career.

Ve clarified that the decision was made to ensure the fight proceeded smoothly, indicating a desire to maintain his winning path, even without Ramos present. Ali respected this choice and noted that Ramos had initially underestimated the situation that led to his suspension.

As the fight drew near, Ramos reconciled with the PBWAF after issuing an apology through his solicitor, which was crucial for his reinstatement to corner Ve. After an urgent meeting, PBWAF lifted Ramos’ suspension, filled with relief and joy for Ve’s camp.

The bout attracted over 300 supporters from Ve’s hometown, solidifying the community’s solidarity. Despite being younger, Ve faced an experienced opponent in Afakasi, who had a professional record of 27-5-1 compared to Ve’s 17-1-0. Ultimately, Ve emerged victorious, winning by technical knockout in the sixth round, following a well-timed strategy that resulted in an injury to Afakasi.

This victory not only highlighted Ve’s resilience and skill but also catalyzed PBWAF’s efforts to facilitate his contention for a Commonwealth title shot, showcasing the promising future for Fijian boxing.

In summary, this event marks a pivotal chapter for Fijian boxing, illustrating the significance of teamwork, determination, and the ability to overcome disputes in pursuit of greatness. It stands as a powerful reminder that challenges can lead to triumph, fostering hope for athletes striving for success in their respective careers.
