Boxing Commission of Fiji Implements New Rule on Fijian Title Holdings

A boxer may only hold one Fijian title according to the rules and regulations of the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF), which came into effect on May 17.

The BCF enforced this rule by vacating the flyweight and super flyweight titles from the previous holder, Junior Binnu Singh.

Chairman Adi Narayan clarified the matter yesterday after The Fiji Times published a story on June 27.

The rule on dual Fijian titles states that a boxer may only hold one Fijian title. If the champion in a weight division wishes to contest a BCF Fijian title in another weight division, either higher or lower, this must be approved by the BCF directors. Should the champion successfully win that title, they will be given seven days to notify the BCF directors of the Fijian title they wish to be recognized.

“Binnu Singh must be told, you are not the boss, you don’t own titles, they belong to BCF. BCF made rules and regulations that must be complied with. This was given to all the stakeholders on May 17, so these rules have been applied,” Narayan stated.

Narayan assured that the same rule will be applied to other boxers holding more than one title.

“We have now dealt with Binnu Singh because it has become a big issue in the newspaper, blown out of proportion. I informed Binnu Singh in my emails on April 15. He was made aware, but he kept quiet, he accepted it, and all this started because of social media. Now with the Labasa promotion, he claims it’s his title and that others can’t fight for it. For two months, he remained quiet, and suddenly he reacts—it doesn’t work that way,” Narayan explained.

“Winston Hill is the next boxer we will approach with due respect because he won two titles convincingly, and we are very proud of him. We’ll give him seven days to respond and whatever his answer is, we will act. The other titleholders will follow. We are trying to be fair to all boxers; we don’t want to come down hard,” he added.
