Violence erupted during the Fiji heavyweight title fight at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, on Saturday night, severely damaging the reputation of professional boxing in the nation.

Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Adi Narayan expressed his disappointment, calling the events an embarrassment to the sport. He indicated that the BCF will review video footage of the incidents and take strict action against those involved.

The trouble began when titleholder James ‘The Beast’ Singh struck Semi Daulolo-ma while they were both on the canvas. This fight marked their third meeting; earlier in the round, Singh had been knocked down by a hook from Dauloloma. As the second round progressed, Dauloloma cornered Singh against the ropes, leading to both fighters tumbling to the canvas. Singh then punched Dauloloma twice while on the ground, prompting referee Fatu Tuimanono to intervene as chaos ensued. Ring officials had to enter the ring to separate the fighters as tempers flared, leading to punches being thrown from both corners and one striking a ring official. The bout was ultimately stopped and ruled a no-contest.

Narayan condemned the incident, stating, “What happened is an embarrassment for professional boxing. They are both champions and both at fault, which is why I made the ruling of no-contest.” He emphasized that what occurred was unacceptable in professional boxing.

In addition to this incident, Narayan highlighted another occurrence where featherweight boxer Mikaele Ravolaca entered the ring to challenge Umbayed Haider. This led to a heated exchange and a near scuffle before officials intervened. The Commission plans to investigate both incidents thoroughly and will hold a press conference to inform the public.

Narayan mentioned the Commission might convene today, having obtained the video footage. He acknowledged the rising tension before the heavyweight fight and stated that careful action is necessary moving forward.

When asked for comments, Singh dismissed Dauloloma’s status, saying, “He is not a true champion; there’ll be no rematch, and he can go back to the amateurs.” Dauloloma countered, expressing his disappointment: “Once you fall and he starts hitting you from the back, is that allowed? I would like a rematch in November if they allow me to. I will come for the title.”
