An exhibition boxing event scheduled for last Saturday was canceled due to a double booking at Subrail Park in Labasa, according to promoter Freddy Chand of South Pacific Boxing. The venue was also reserved for a church service later in the evening, which led to the cancellation of the boxing matches.
Chand emphasized that neither the promoter nor the Boxing Commission Fiji should be held responsible for the mishap, placing the blame on the Labasa Town Council instead. He expressed disappointment over the disruption, stating that the limited timeframe resulted in the lack of exhibition bouts, leaving both boxers and their fans frustrated. Some attendees even requested partial refunds due to the absence of the expected matches.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Chand noted that numerous talented boxers were still showcased. In response to the situation, Paul Jaduram, chair of the Labasa Town Council, explained that the double booking stemmed from an outdated system that is currently being updated. He assured that measures are being taken to prevent such occurrences in the future, acknowledging that similar issues had affected other events as well. Jaduram extended apologies to the promoters, organizers, and spectators for the inconvenience caused.
