Bringing three International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Asia Pacific titles to Fiji is a significant financial undertaking. The event requires the participation of top regional boxers, their trainers, and IBO officials to ensure compliance with all regulations, along with meeting the standards set by the Boxing Commission of Fiji.

South Pacific Boxing Promotions director Mohammed Shameem revealed that organizing such an event costs over $100,000. Speaking to SUNsports, the Vancouver-based promoter shared his long-standing passion for boxing, which began in the 1960s when he watched his late father, Noor Mohammed, promoting matches. He recalled witnessing his first boxing event at a local theater, where Filimoni Naliva claimed the Fiji heavyweight title.

Despite being a successful businessman, Shameem remains committed to supporting local communities in Fiji, which he considers his home. He mentioned that he previously aided in promoting Naliva’s son, Savenaca, to the title of Fiji’s light heavyweight champion.

Shameem is preparing for his 19th event, which will bring boxing to various areas, including Ba, Lautoka, and Labasa, where the promotions have benefited local clubs and fighters. Although he has incurred losses in many of his events, his satisfaction comes from making a positive impact on people’s lives.

Prominent sports figure Sonny Bill Williams is set to arrive in Fiji today as the chief guest for the boxing event. He plans to engage with students and community members, discussing the dangers of drug use and encouraging youth to stay away from drugs.

This upcoming event marks a significant milestone for Shameem, featuring three IBO titles along with one Fiji title, culminating in a total of four championship bouts. He emphasizes the goal of showcasing that Fiji can produce world-class champions.

In other news, Australia’s Tonga Tongotongo, known for his knockout prowess, has landed in Fiji to defend the IBO Asia Pacific cruiserweight title against local fighter Sebastian ‘The Sniper’ Singh. With a record of eight knockout victories, Tongotongo acknowledges Singh as a tough opponent but expresses readiness for the challenge.

Additionally, Lachlan O’Shea from Australia, who will be competing against Winston Hill for the IBO Asia Pacific super welterweight title, also arrived on the same flight as Tongotongo. O’Shea expressed his excitement about the fight and looks forward to a competitive match in the ring.
