Boston Basketball Club have begun final preparations to defend their Vodafone Fiji Cup crown, but say the challenge of retaining the title is already clear as rivals sharpen their own squads ahead of the tournament next month. Centre Victor Koyamainavure, a key figure in Boston’s championship run, acknowledged the extra pressure that comes with being the team to beat and stressed the squad is working to stay ahead despite practical hurdles.

As the latest development in Boston’s build-up, the club has established a daily evening routine, training from 6pm to 7pm at local venues to sharpen fitness and on-court combinations. Koyamainavure said the regimented sessions are aimed at maintaining a baseline of team conditioning and ensuring players are familiar with set plays and defensive rotations, even when full-team attendance is inconsistent.

A boost to Boston’s title defence has come with the return of several experienced players who had been plying their trade overseas. Their arrival adds depth and leadership to the roster and, according to Koyamainavure, gives the coaching staff more tactical options. He described the returning campaigners as important both for their skills and for the experience they bring in high-pressure matches — a factor the club hopes will prove decisive in knockout stages.

Despite those reinforcements, consistent preparation has been complicated by players’ work and family commitments. Koyamainavure revealed only a handful of squad members have managed to attend every evening session, forcing the club to encourage individual fitness work outside organised trainings. He said Boston have set fitness benchmarks for players to maintain on their own and are using the evening sessions to integrate returning players and refine team communication.

Communication and cohesion are being prioritised in the final weeks before the competition. Koyamainavure flagged teamwork and on-court communication as areas Boston will concentrate on as they chase back-to-back titles, noting that execution under pressure will be vital when games tighten. He also paid tribute to the families and friends of players, saying their support has been “a big motivator” during the mixed-availability lead-up.

The Vodafone Fiji Cup starts on the 4th of next month at the FMF Gym in Suva, setting the stage for a competition where every participating side will be eager to knock off the reigning champions. Boston’s latest preparations — daily evening sessions, the return of seasoned players and a focus on systems and communication — outline how they intend to meet that challenge, even if balancing life off the court remains the team’s greatest obstacle.
