The Ministry of Sugar Industry is working to improve sugarcane productivity and support farmers in the Northern Division by providing assistance to 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 farmers in Seaqaqa through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program.
Eligible farmers under this initiative can receive financial aid amounting to 30 percent of the cost of lease renewals, capped at a maximum of $7,500.
During the distribution of grant agreements to farmers, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh emphasized that the program is designed to alleviate financial challenges faced by farmers and motivate both new and existing farmers to increase sugarcane production.
Singh noted that the sugar industry is the largest sector in the northern division and requires revitalization. He pointed out that government support through this program was initiated in response to farmers expressing concerns about the high lease renewal premiums.
Additionally, two farmers from Seaqaqa received aid through the Farm Mechanization Grant, which includes support for a Cane Planter and Fertilizer Applicator.
The Ministry plans to extend similar assistance to sugarcane farmers in the western division as well. So far, 177 sugarcane farmers from the northern and western divisions have benefited from this program.
Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Janab expressed his gratitude for the government’s efforts, stating that the financial support has brought significant relief to him and his family, as the government has covered $5,000 of his $15,000 premium.
