Boosting Sugarcane Production: Northern Farmers Get a Financial Lift

The Ministry of Sugar has provided assistance to enhance sugarcane productivity and support farmers in the northern division. A total of 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 farmers in Seaqaqa received help through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program.

This initiative offers eligible farmers financial assistance, covering 30% of lease renewal costs, up to a maximum of $7,500. During a ceremony to distribute grant agreements, Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, emphasized that the program is designed to alleviate financial pressures on farmers and promote increased sugarcane production.

Minister Singh highlighted the significance of the sugar industry in the northern division, noting the need for its revitalization. The government initiated this program in response to farmers’ concerns regarding high lease renewal premiums.

Additionally, two farmers in Seaqaqa received support through the Farm Mechanization Grant, which included a cane planter and fertilizer applicator. The Ministry plans to extend this assistance to sugarcane farmers in the western division, with a total of 177 farmers from both divisions having benefited from the program so far.

Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Janab expressed gratitude for the government’s support, stating that the financial aid has greatly relieved his family’s burden, as the government covered $5,000 of his $15,000 premium.
