The Ministry of Sugar Industry is working to improve sugarcane productivity and support farmers in the Northern Division by providing assistance to 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 farmers in Seaqaqa through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program.
This initiative offers eligible farmers financial aid covering 30 percent of their lease renewal costs, with a maximum amount of $7,500. During the distribution of grant agreements to the farmers, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh stated that the program is designed to alleviate financial pressures on farmers and encourage both new and existing growers to increase sugarcane production.
Singh emphasized the importance of reviving the sugar industry, which remains the largest sector in the northern division. The government’s assistance follows complaints from farmers regarding the high costs associated with lease renewal premiums. Additionally, two Seaqaqa farmers received support through the Farm Mechanization Grant for purchasing a Cane Planter and Fertilizer Applicator.
The Ministry has plans to extend its assistance to sugarcane farmers in the western division as well. To date, 177 farmers from the northern and western divisions have benefitted from this program.
Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Janab expressed his gratitude towards the government’s efforts, stating that the financial support provided a significant relief for him and his family, as the government covered $5,000 of his $15,000 premium.
