Boosting Sugarcane: Farmers in Vanua Levu Get Vital Support

The Ministry of Sugar has provided assistance to boost sugarcane productivity for farmers in the northern division. Today, 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 in Seaqaqa received support through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program.

This initiative offers eligible farmers financial aid covering 30% of lease renewal costs, up to a maximum of $7,500.

During the grant agreement handover, Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, highlighted that the program is designed to alleviate financial pressure on farmers and to promote increased sugarcane production. He emphasized the significance of the sugar industry as a vital sector in the northern division that requires revitalization. The government developed this support program in response to farmers’ concerns regarding high lease renewal premiums.

Additionally, two farmers from Seaqaqa received assistance through the Farm Mechanization Grant for a cane planter and fertilizer applicator. The Ministry plans to extend support to sugarcane farmers in the western division, with a total of 177 farmers in both the north and western divisions benefiting from this program so far.

Mohammed Janab, a sugarcane farmer from Seaqaqa, expressed gratitude for the government’s support, noting that the financial assistance has provided significant relief for him and his family, as the government has covered $5,000 of his $15,000 premium.
