Boosting Sugarcane Dreams: Government Grants to Farmers

To boost sugarcane production and support farmers in the northern division, the Ministry of Sugar has provided assistance to 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 farmers in Seaqaqa through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program.

This initiative offers eligible farmers financial aid amounting to 30% of lease renewal costs, capped at $7,500.

At a ceremony where grant agreements were presented, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh emphasized the program’s goal of alleviating financial strains on farmers and promoting increased sugarcane production among both new and current farmers.

Minister Singh noted that the sugar industry is the largest sector in the northern division and requires revitalization. He highlighted that this government assistance was created in response to farmers’ concerns regarding steep lease renewal premiums.

Additionally, two farmers from Seaqaqa received help through the Farm Mechanization Grant for a Cane Planter and Fertilizer Applicator.

The Ministry plans to extend support to sugarcane farmers in the western division, with 177 farmers in both the north and western areas already benefitting from this program.

Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Janab expressed gratitude for the government’s support, stating that it has provided significant relief for his family. He noted that the government has covered $5,000 of his $15,000 premium.
