To tackle the ongoing labor shortage in the sugarcane farming sector, the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Ministry of Sugar have introduced a significant initiative by providing five Tractor Service Providers (TSPs) in the Western Division. This support is part of the Ministry’s Farm Mechanisation grant program aimed at enhancing productivity within the sugar industry.
The assistance was extended to TSPs located in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, with machinery handed over in Ba by the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh. During the event, Minister Singh emphasized the importance of farm mechanisation in addressing the challenges of labor shortages and high production costs, stating, “We are prioritising farm mechanisation as a key part of our strategy to boost sugar productivity.”
The Minister described the program as vital for modernizing the sugar industry, reducing production costs, and increasing crop yields. Noa Kautoga, president of Varavu Farmers’ Cooperative, expressed gratitude toward the government for its continued support of sugarcane farmers, highlighting how the mechanisation initiative empowers them to adopt modern farming techniques and mitigate labor issues.
The government has established the farm mechanisation grant program, which includes a 50% subsidy on machinery costs, making this equipment more accessible and affordable for service providers. This initiative is expected to benefit farmers through subsidized rates for essential services such as cane planting and fertilizer application.
This proactive approach by the government signals a commitment to fostering a sustainable and competitive sugar industry, ultimately benefiting farmers and the economy at large. By embracing modern technologies, the sector can look towards a more prosperous and efficient future.
In summary, the initiative not only helps alleviate labor shortages but also positions the sugar industry for a future where productivity and competitiveness thrive through modern practices. With these developments, there is hope for a revitalized sugarcane farming sector that can adapt to challenges and ensure the continued support of farmers.
