Residents of Newtown, Cuvu, Nadroga, are in shock following the discovery of a community member’s body floating in the Cuvu River yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as Ravnit Dass, a 32-year-old mechanic. His body was discovered by two farmers working in their plantations near the river.
Rattan Kumar, the 66-year-old father of Mr. Dass, recounted the last time he spoke with his son. “He came home on Monday night around 7 pm, dropped off his tools, and mentioned he was going to a friend’s house,” Mr. Kumar said. “That was the last I heard from him until his body was found today.”
Subrail Narayan, the chairman of the Nadroga Navosa Advisory Council, said that this tragedy represents a significant loss to the community. “He used to fix my vehicle. He was smart and hard-working with a good heart,” Mr. Narayan said.
Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu stated that law enforcement was notified around midday. “Police managed to identify the male deceased and further details will emerge as the investigation continues,” he said.
Funeral arrangements will proceed following the post-mortem examination.
