Residents of Newtown, Cuvu, Nadroga, are in shock after the body of a community member was found floating in Cuvu River yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as Ravnit Dass, 32, a mechanic.
Two farmers working on their plantations next to the river discovered his body.
Rattan Kumar, 66, Mr. Dass’s father, said their last conversation took place on Monday.
“He came home on Monday night around 7 p.m., dropped off his tools, and said he was going to a friend’s house,” Mr. Kumar recounted. “That was the last I heard from him until his body was discovered.”
Nadroga Navosa Advisory Council chairman Subrail Narayan stated this is a significant loss for the community.
“He used to fix my vehicle. He was smart, hard-working, and had a good heart,” Mr. Narayan shared.
Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu reported that the authorities were notified around midday.
“Police managed to identify the deceased male, and further details will be released later. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.
Funeral arrangements will proceed following the post-mortem examination.
