Residents of Newtown, Cuvu, Nadroga, are in shock after the body of one of their community members was found floating in the Cuvu River yesterday.
The deceased, Ravnit Dass, 32, was a mechanic.
His body was discovered by two farmers working on their plantations next to the river.
Ravnit’s father, Rattan Kumar, 66, said their last conversation was on Monday.
“He came home on Monday night at about 7 pm, dropped his tools, and said he was going to his friend’s house,” Mr. Kumar said.
“That was the last time I heard from him until today, when his body was discovered.”
Nadroga Navosa Advisory Council chairman Subrail Narayan described the loss as significant for the community.
“He used to fix my vehicle. He was smart, a hard-working guy with a pretty good heart,” Mr. Narayan said.
Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu said authorities were notified around midday.
“Police managed to identify the deceased male, and additional details will be revealed later. The investigation is ongoing,” he said.
Funeral arrangements will begin after the post-mortem examination.
