Residents of Boca in Bulileka, Labasa, are voicing concerns about persistent flash floods attributed to inadequate drainage infrastructure. Jai Karan, a 57-year-old local, highlights that the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has not taken action to clear the blocked drains, despite numerous appeals made over the last 25 years.
Karan states, “Blocked drains have caused flash floods for decades. We once again urge the FRA to address this issue and help prevent flooding, which affects all our residents.” The impact of flooding disrupts the Boca Loop Circular Road, forcing drivers to navigate hazardous conditions during heavy rains to reach their destinations, including nearby Labasa Town.
The suburb of Bulileka, situated just a few kilometers from Labasa, not only grapples with flooding challenges but also faces health risks associated with the overflow. Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector for the Northern region, has advised residents to refrain from disposing of household waste in drains and creeks, as this aggravates the situation and increases the potential for flooding.
Cavuilati warns that flooded areas pose significant health risks, including leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhea (LTDD). The residents continue to call for immediate attention and action to tackle their flooding issues, aiming to protect their community from additional disruption and health threats.
By highlighting the collaborative effort needed between local authorities and the community to mitigate these risks, there is hope that meaningful changes can be implemented. Addressing these concerns could lead not only to improved infrastructure but also to a healthier environment for all residents of Boca.
