Residents of Boca, Bulileka in Labasa are increasingly concerned about persistent flash floods attributed to inadequate drainage in their community. Jai Karan, a long-time resident aged 57, has expressed frustration that the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has not addressed these drainage issues, despite numerous pleas spanning over the last 25 years.
Karan, representing the sentiments of the village, stated, “Blocked drains have caused flash floods for decades. We once again urge the FRA to address this issue and help prevent flooding, which affects all our residents.” The flooding disrupts crucial access along the Boca Loop Circular Road, with motorists facing hazardous conditions during heavy rainfall as they attempt to reach their workplaces or the nearby Labasa Town.
In addition to the inconvenience, the flooding poses significant health risks. Divisional Health Inspector for the Northern region, Vakaruru Cavuilati, has advised residents against disposing of household waste in the drains and creeks, as this practice worsens blockages and increases the likelihood of flooding. He highlighted the elevated risks of diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhoea (LTDD) in flooded areas.
The residents of Boca are urgently appealing for prompt action to mitigate flooding problems and protect their community from both disruption and potential health crises.
This situation underscores the importance of effective infrastructure management and community cooperation to address the ongoing challenges faced by residents. By working together and advocating for urgent attention from local authorities, communities can hope for improved living conditions and a proactive approach to disaster management in the future.
