Residents of Boca, Bulileka, in Labasa, are voicing their concerns about persistent flash floods caused by inadequate drainage in their community. Jai Karan, a long-time resident, emphasizes that the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has not taken action to clean the drains despite numerous requests spanning the last 25 years.
Mr. Karan noted, “Blocked drains have caused flash floods for decades. We once again urge the FRA to address this issue and help prevent flooding, which affects all our residents.” The frequent flooding disrupts the Boca Loop Circular Road, posing risks for motorists navigating through heavy rains to reach their jobs or Labasa Town.
As a suburban area located just a few kilometers from Labasa, Bulileka contends not only with the inconveniences of flooding but also with significant health risks. Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector Northern, has called on residents to refrain from disposing of household waste into drains and creeks, as this worsens blockages and heightens the chance of flooding.
He cautioned, “Flooded areas heighten the risk of leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhoea (LTDD).” The community of Boca continues to appeal for urgent measures to mitigate flooding issues and safeguard the residents from further disturbances and potential health crises.
This situation underscores the importance of infrastructure maintenance and community cooperation in ensuring safe living conditions. By uniting in advocacy for improved drainage systems, residents can potentially foster greater awareness and prompt action from responsible authorities.
Summary: Residents of Boca in Labasa are stressing the need for improved drainage to prevent recurrent flash floods, which have been neglected for 25 years. Health concerns have also been raised regarding the risks associated with floodwaters. Community members are urging immediate action from the Fiji Roads Authority to address these issues effectively.
