A double-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The property, which was situated outside the Sigatoka Fire Boundary, was reported to the Sigatoka Fire Station around 2:30 AM, according to Puamau Sowani, the chief executive officer of the National Fire Authority.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the building engulfed in flames. They quickly took action to prevent the fire from spreading further, effectively controlling the situation. With the aid of the Korolevu team, the firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the fire and address hotspots.
The building, owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, housed a shopping complex on the ground floor that included four small shops, such as a kava shop, and featured a nightclub and the owner’s apartment on the second floor. Thankfully, Mr. Shankar and his wife were alerted to the danger by their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, and escaped safely. However, the fire caused total destruction to the top floor, resulting in estimated damages of $750,000.
Authorities have announced that an investigation will be initiated to determine the possible cause of the fire. Mr. Sowani emphasized the importance of fire safety awareness, urging community members to remain vigilant in protecting their homes from such disasters.
Despite the significant loss, the quick response from the fire brigade and the community’s support during the incident highlights the importance of preparedness and cooperation in emergencies. This can serve as a reminder for everyone to prioritize safety measures and remain vigilant in fire prevention.
In summary, while the loss is heartbreaking for the Shankar family and the local community, the response from first responders showcases the strength and solidarity of the community during challenging times.
