Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden convened in Lima, Peru, during the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, where they engaged in meaningful discussions aimed at stabilizing their bilateral relationship and addressing pressing global challenges.

During their meeting, both leaders recognized advancements in significant areas such as climate action, trade relations, and interpersonal exchanges, committing to keep communication channels open. President Xi emphasized the progress made in their relationship over the past four years, despite a backdrop of challenges. He reiterated essential principles for China’s foreign policy, which include respect for sovereignty and a firm stance against “Taiwan independence.” He stressed that mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation are vital for a sustainable partnership between the two nations.

Xi outlined seven core principles to guide China-U.S. interactions, highlighting the necessity for strategic understanding, credibility, and respecting each other’s boundaries. He urged both nations to act responsibly to fulfill global expectations and to avoid conflict.

President Biden reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the one-China policy and voiced opposition to Taiwan’s independence. He underscored that while competition between the two nations is inevitable, it should not lead to conflict. The importance of collaboration in key areas such as artificial intelligence and counternarcotics was also a key focus.

The leaders discussed shared concerns like cybersecurity, tensions in the South China Sea, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. They explored strategies to foster peace and maintain robust supply chains, avoiding economic decoupling.

Both presidents emphasized the necessity of human oversight in nuclear weapon usage and advocated for stronger international cooperation on artificial intelligence. They agreed that the rivalry between major countries should not shape global interactions, calling for unity and mutual growth instead.

The meeting reflected a shared commitment to enhancing bilateral ties, with Xi concluding by reaffirming China’s resolve to cultivate a stable and constructive relationship with the United States. He emphasized that ongoing dialogue and cooperation are pivotal for future progress.

This development is a hopeful indication that despite historical tensions, both nations are striving for a more harmonious and cooperative relationship—an essential factor for global stability and prosperity.
