Beware: Unregulated Dental Procedures Put Public Health at Risk!

The Consumer Council of Fiji is sounding the alarm about the rise of unregulated and potentially dangerous dental procedures being performed by untrained individuals, which pose considerable health risks to the public. Council CEO Seema Shandil noted that while no official complaints have been made, investigations have found traders offering dental jewelry applications for prices as low as $5.

Shandil highlighted the serious risks associated with these informal practices, particularly those taking place at market stalls. She raised concerns about the materials and adhesives being utilized, warning that they could be harmful to people’s health.

“Unregulated and unhygienic practices expose consumers to severe risks, including infectious diseases, toxic reactions, and long-term health complications,” said Mrs. Shandil. She strongly advised consumers to avoid such procedures due to the potential life-threatening consequences.

For those who have experienced any issues or have concerns regarding these practices, the Council encourages them to report their experiences to the National Consumer Helpline at 155. Complaints will be forwarded to the Fiji Medical and Dental Council for further investigation and action.

Addressing the traders involved in these hazardous activities, Mrs. Shandil issued a stern warning, stating, “You are endangering public health and safety. Such activities will not be tolerated, and we urge you to stop immediately.”

The Consumer Council reaffirmed its dedication to protecting consumer rights and ensuring public health and safety through vigilant monitoring and enforcement.

As a reminder, this situation underscores the importance of seeking dental care only from qualified professionals to safeguard personal health. By staying informed and reporting unsafe practices, the community can work together to maintain high standards in health and safety.
