Beware the Rumors: Police Warn Against Sharing Unverified Social Media Claims

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu has called on the public to exercise caution when sharing information on social media platforms. This advisory comes in the wake of a misleading screenshot circulating online, which falsely claimed that police had detained boys for allegedly selling green coconut juice that was purportedly spiked with drugs.

Police officials have clarified that no such incidents or reports exist regarding the apprehension of these boys. Witnesses in the area of Namadi Heights near Suva stated that the boys were actually caught in the act of stealing coconuts and breadfruits from local homes, rather than engaging in any illicit drug-related activities.

“In the event of a genuine trend or concern, police will make it a priority to communicate these updates to the public. We urge everyone to be careful about spreading unverified information that can cause unnecessary panic,” remarked ACP Driu.

It’s important to remember that while social media can be a helpful tool for communication, misinformation can lead to misunderstandings within the community. The police department and community members should work together to ensure that accurate information is shared, creating a safer environment for everyone.

This incident serves as a reminder of the crucial role that responsible communication plays in community safety. By verifying information before sharing and relying on official sources, the public can help maintain trust and stability in their neighborhoods.
